Bryan Cranston Responds to ‘Lazy’ Fans Casting Him as the DCU’s Lex Luthor Bryan Cranston has responded to fans who have been casting him as Lex Luthor in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). In an interview with MTV News at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015, Cranston said that he was flattered by the fan support, but that he had never been approached by Warner Bros. about the role. He also said that he thought the fan casting was “lazy” because it was based on his performance as Walter White in Breaking Bad.
“They’re thinking, ‘Who could play Lex Luthor?’ Who is bald and can be menacing? Oh! Walter White! We can get that guy,'” Cranston said. “But it’s not very inspiring casting.”
Cranston’s comments sparked a debate among fans, with some agreeing that the fan casting was lazy and others arguing that Cranston would have been a great choice for the role. Ultimately, Jesse Eisenberg was cast as Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
In a later interview, Cranston said that he was open to playing Lex Luthor in the future, but that he would only do it if he was given the opportunity to create his own version of the character.
“I’m not interested in just playing a bald guy who’s evil,” Cranston said. “I want to play a complex character with depth and nuance.”
It remains to be seen if Cranston will ever get the chance to play Lex Luthor, but his comments suggest that he is still interested in the role. If he is given the opportunity, he could certainly bring a unique and compelling take on the character.
