Narivetta’s Story: Background to the Muthanga Incident

Narivetta  (Jackal Hunt) is inspired by the Muthanga incident that happened in Wayanad, Kerala in 2003, where the tribal community was protesting against the government for their land. The story of the film revolves around Varghese Peter (Tovino Thomas), an ambitious and passionate young man. He reluctantly joins the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and is sent to monitor the tribal agitation in Muthanga.

The film begins with a non-linear narrative where Varghese is chased by the police. As the story progresses, we learn that he is a policeman himself who changes after seeing the cruelty of the system and the injustice done to the tribals. Will Varghese be able to bring justice to his friend and the tribal community? This question makes the film thrilling.

Performances: Tovino Thomas and Arya Salim shine

Tovino Thomas brings life to the character of Varghese Peter. His journey from an immature and selfish youth to an aware and courageous whistleblower is impressive. His performance is the strongest aspect of the film. On the other hand,  Arya Salim  has played the role of tribal leader CK Shanthi (inspired by CK Janu) brilliantly. His intensity and credibility keep the audience captivated.

Suraj Venjaramoodu (as Basheer) and Cheran (police head) have also performed brilliantly. Cheran’s body language and dubbing make his character even more real. However, some characters could have got more screen time, such as Pranav Thiofin (Thami Adiaar) and other tribal characters.

Technical Aspects: Visuals and music are amazing

Cinematographer Vijay has made the film look great for the big screen. His skill comes to the fore in shooting the protest and interrogation scenes. Jakes Bejoy’s background music deepens the mood of the story. The editing (Shameer Muhammad) and VFX, especially in the shootout scenes, are impressive. However, the focus of the story seems a bit scattered in some parts.

What’s special?

  • Social Relevance:  Boldly raising a sensitive issue like the Muthanga incident.
  • Performance:  Powerful performances from Tovino Thomas and Arya Salim.
  • Technical Excellence:  Excellent use of cinematography, music, and VFX.
  • Crisp Runtime:  The duration of the film keeps the audience engaged.

What remained incomplete?

The biggest shortcoming of the film is the overly naive portrayal of Varghese’s character. Writer Abin Joseph tried to show the story from an outsider’s (Varghese) perspective, which did not fully bring out the depth of the tribal community. Some characters, such as the characters inspired by CK Shanthi and Geethanandan, should have been given more screen space. Also, the love story and some dramatic scenes in the first half slow down the tempo of the film.

Why watch Narivetta?

Narivetta  is a film that entertains as well as makes you think. It brings forth a sad chapter in Kerala’s history and shows the struggles of the tribal communities. If you are looking for social drama, action, and strong performances, then this film is for you. This film is not only for fans of Malayalam cinema but for all those who love to watch meaningful cinema.
